Celebrity hairstylists eschewed big hair in favor of sleek sophistication for their A-list clients.

The Globes are all about exuding an air of breezy simplicity (whether attendees actually feel that way or not), which charges glam squads with the task of creatively capturing this vibe. Not to worry -- this year hair stylists nailed it with the event's most-seen hair trend: sleek, straight locks.

Sure, there were a few elaborate updos (Taylor Swift, Julie Bowen) and chic chignons (Margot Robbie, Emma Watson), but the biggest impression-maker was the simplicity of hair worn down, with nary a hint of a beachy wave or Veronica Lake curl. Reese Witherspoon, Allison Williams, Naomi Watts, Laura Carmichael and Leslie Mann were among those who chose to play it straight.

Wella hairstylist Anthony Campbell said Williams' graphic Alexander McQueen dress "shaped the inspiration to keep her hair looking elegant, simple and clean." His finishing touch was adding a few drops of Wella Professionals Oil Reflections to up the shine factor without giving hair a weighted, greasy look. Also looking to the dress was Carmichael's stylist, Blake Burkholder, who said the Downton Abbey star's geometric Viktor & Rolf number demanded a hairstyle that was both simple and strong. Burkholder, who used John Frieda Frizz Ease 100% Shine Glossing Mist to get Lady Edith's hair smooth, named Mary Quant and Gwyneth Paltrow as inspiration for the sleek look.

Hairstylists take note: graphic black-and-white dress plus sleek hair equals a winning and elegant awards season looks.
